COFFEYVILLE, Kansas – Quarterback Academy veteran Andy Summerlin committed to a D-1 scholarship with the University of Memphis today. With classes starting this week, he’s already on the road to Memphis.

“I’m very thankful to have the opportunity and hopeful that I can take advantage of it ,” he said, Tuesday evening while driving east out of Coffeyville on State Highway 166.

Owner of Coffeyville Community College records for passing yards in a season (2,302) and completions in a game (32), Summerlin led Coffeyville to a No. 12 finish in the national community college polls this season.

He has a scholarship agreement with Memphis and three years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

“Memphis is a good fit for me,” Summerlin said. “The city has a lot of options to go do things. Having said that, football is what it comes down to. Offensively, it’s a good fit and I have the opportunity to come in and play early.”

The pro-style pocket passer earned first-team Jayhawk Conference honors this season as a redshirt freshman. The Jayhawk Conference is known as one of the toughest community college conferences in the nation.

Summerlin is a veteran of QBA training with Will Hewlett, the Academy’s Director of Player Development.

“He’s a great kid. Very talented and humble. Very respectful,” Hewlett said. “He’s extremely intelligent and he has an NFL frame and arm.”

Summerlin (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) is considering a future in coaching, and said that he’d be open to an NFL opportunity if it comes along.

“I’m being realistic,” he said. “I’ll get a good education, but I’ll take advantage of any other opportunities that come my way.”

The opportunities aren’t bad so far. Memphis returns four starters on the O-line, along with quality depth at the skill positions. The Tigers are in the process of building a new weight room and indoor training facility.
